SafeSite for the Great American Condom Campaign

 

At the beginning of the Spring 2014 and Fall 2014 semesters, I was selected to be a SafeSite for the Great American Condom Campaign.  Soon after finding out I was selected, Trojan sent me a box of 500 condoms and information.  As a SafeSite, I am responsible for distributing 500 Trojan condoms and safe sex information to students at IUPUI.  Since this position is very independent, I got to choose how I wanted to distribute the condoms.  I worked closely with the Student Wellness Coalition and Student Health during different campus events.  I also distributed the condoms and information to the AIDS and Society class. Most of the condoms and information were distributed during the Spring Break Health Fair, where students were able to come up to our organization table and get the condoms and information when they wanted to.  During these events, we distributed the condoms and information to many students while answering any questions that students had regarding condoms, the information, sexual health, or health in general.

 

This experience taught me a lot about self-directed work and focusing on what needs to be completed without relying much on outside sources.  I also learned a lot about sex education and educating my peers about sometimes "uncomfortable" topics.  I found this experience to be extremely valuable since I want to work with those with HIV/AIDS and/or in sex education.
